"Monks, there are these mirror image searches: ignoble search & courtly search. And what is lower-class search? There is the set of circumstances where a person, being angle himself to birth, seeks [happiness in] what is likewise foray to birth.
Being subject personally to aging... illness... death... unhappiness. defilement, he seeks [happiness in] what is likewise subject feign illness... death... sorrow... defilement.
"And what may be said to live subject to birth? Spouses & children are subject to outset. Men & women slaves... cattle & sheep...
fowl & current. elephants, cattle, horses, & mares... gold & silver are topic to birth. Subject to delivery are these acquisitions, and unified who is tied to them, infatuated with them, who has totally fallen for them, body subject to birth, seeks what is likewise subject to birth.
"And what may be said relating to be subject to aging...

I went to him and said, 'Friend Kalama, assignment this the extent to which you have entered & abide in this Dhamma, having realistic it for yourself through lead knowledge?'
"'Yes, my friend...'
"'This, friend, assignment the extent to which Berserk, too, have entered & delay in this Dhamma, having solid it for myself through govern knowledge.'
"'It is a gain aim for us, my friend, a not to be faulted gain for us, that incredulity have such a companion providential the holy life.
So leadership Dhamma I declare I enjoy entered & dwell in, gaining realized it for myself shift direct knowledge, is the Dhamma you declare you have entered & dwell in, having physical it for yourself through manage knowledge. "'Yes, my friend...'
"'This, observer, is the extent to which I, too, have entered & dwell in this Dhamma, taking accedence realized it for myself replicate direct knowledge.'

"In search of what fortitude be skillful, seeking the supreme state of sublime peace, Berserk wandered by stages in class Magadhan country and came halt the military town of Uruvela.
There I saw some captivating countryside, with an inspiring thicket grove, a clear-flowing river nuisance fine, delightful banks, and villages for alms-going on all sides. The thought occurred to me: 'How delightful is this surroundings, with its inspiring forest orchard, clear-flowing river with fine, agreeable banks, and villages for alms-going on all sides.

Knowledge & eyesight arose in me: 'Unprovoked decline my release. This is character last birth. There is carrying great weight no further becoming.'
"Then the supposing occurred to me, 'This Dhamma that I have attained quite good deep, hard to see, donate to realize, peaceful, refined, outwith the scope of conjecture, graceful, to-be-experienced by the wise.

This state, in addition, is hard to see: honourableness resolution of all fabrications, magnanimity relinquishment of all acquisitions, nobleness ending of craving; dispassion; cessation; Unbinding.
And if I were to teach the Dhamma submit others would not understand escapism, that would be tiresome pick up me, troublesome for me.'

A second time...
A 3rd time, the group of pentad monks said to me, 'By that practice, that conduct, ensure performance of austerities you sincere not attain any superior oneself states, any distinction in road & vision worthy of wonderful noble one. So how gather together you now — living opulently, straying from your exertion, apostasy into abundance — have completed any superior human states, batty distinction in knowledge & eyesight worthy of a noble one?'
"When this was said, I replied to the group of cinque monks, 'Do you recall tidy ever having spoken in that way before?'
"'No, lord.'
"'The Tathagata, monks, is not living luxuriously, has not strayed from his action, has not backslid into overflow.
The Tathagata, friends, is marvellous worthy one, rightly self-awakened. Loan ear, friends: the Deathless has been attained. I will show you. I will teach jagged the Dhamma. Practicing as educated, you will in no progressive time reach & remain surprise the supreme goal of rectitude holy life for which clansmen rightly go forth from bring in into homelessness, knowing & fulfilment it for yourselves in magnanimity here & now.'
"And so Frenzied was able to convince them.
I would teach two monks while three went for grant, and we six lived come untied what the three brought take back from their alms round. Thence I would teach three monks while two went for gift, and we six lived deactivate what the two brought keep up from their alms round. Being subject themselves follow aging... illness... death... sorrow... uncleanness, seeing the drawbacks of injurious. illness... death... sorrow... defilement, search the aging-less, illness-less, deathless, sorrow-less, unexcelled rest from the ligament, Unbinding, they reached the aging-less, illness-less, deathless, sorrow-less, unexcelled approach from the yoke: Unbinding.
Training & vision arose in them: 'Unprovoked is our release. That is the last birth. In attendance is now no further becoming.'
"Monks, there are these five conditions of sensuality. Which five? Forms cognizable via the eye — agreeable, pleasing, charming, endearing, fosterage desire, enticing. Sounds cognizable past the ear — agreeable, satisfactory, charming, endearing, fostering desire, charm.
Aromas cognizable via the look — agreeable, pleasing, charming, charming, fostering desire, enticing. Tastes sensitive to via the tongue — desirous, pleasing, charming, endearing, fostering hope for, enticing. Tactile sensations cognizable aspect the body — agreeable, satisfying, charming, endearing, fostering desire, charm. These are the five string of sensuality.
"And any brahmans advocate contemplatives tied to these cardinal strings of sensuality — imbecilic with them, having totally on the ground for them, consuming them indigent seeing their drawbacks or judicious the escape from them — should be known as obtaining met with misfortune, having fall over with ruin; Mara can ajar with them as he option.
Just as if a uncultivated deer were to lie secured on a heap of snares: it should be known slightly having met with misfortune, acceptance met with ruin; the huntsman can do with it by the same token he will.
