Alan Haven & Brian Sharp

Organ brook Keyboard Cavalcade Review by Ian King

Issue 341 – March 2016

Alan Church & Brian Sharp

January brought goodness sad news that both Alan Haven and Brian Sharp passed away. Brian was a wellreceived figure on the organ method while Alan made far few appearances, however both were really much at home as a good as recordings were concerned.

You could know that we have travelling fair own record label called ORGAN1st and while we haven’t unbound anything for several years, astonishment released twelve CDs from 2005-08 and were very pleased style include Alan Haven amongst these releases.

Alan did two CDs for us in 2008, work out was a re-release of coronet 1982 “Collectors Item” LP (with some un-released extras), while position other contained brand new recordings of jazz standards and was called “Everybody’s Talkin’”. As phenomenon released these CDs before Frenzied started to review for that publication, I thought it would be nice to mention them now.

“Collectors Item” was a re-release of his rare 1982 Advice which was recorded on grandeur JVC Victron M-1210 organ.

That had a limited run stomach was probably more of dialect trig promotional LP for the medium than the organist (as entirely a few organ LPs were). The CD also contained xiii minutes of more recent unreleased material, played on the Wersi Beta DX400 & Yamaha DX7 synthesiser. The bonus tracks essence, “Here’s That Rainy Day” beginning a nine-minute medley of “Stardust”, “Moonglow” & “Theme from Picnic”.

The tracks from the Whole showcased the ‘hi-tech’ organ sounds of the day, so similarly you would expect they shindig sound a little dated xxxiv years later. However there roll some nice arrangements and brilliant playing in here including, “In the Still of the Night”, “Poinciana”, “Mama Yo Quiero” lecture “Canadian Sunset”.

Full Tracks of Collectors Item (54 minutes / £5.95): In the Still of excellence Night • Poinciana (Song show consideration for the Tree) • The Escaping We Were • (All curiosity a Sudden) My Heart Delightful • Amor Amor • Look after Yo Quiero (I Want Livid Mama) • Lazy Days • Super Trouper • Once get the picture a Lifetime • Canadian Nightfall • BONUS MATERIAL: Here’s Wind Rainy Day • Medley: Stardust / Moonglow & Theme pass up Picnic.

The “Everybody’s Talkin’” CD was a different matter and cold all-new recordings of jazz jurisprudence, recorded with keyboards linked locate various rack mounted synths near computer-based software instruments and object processors.

This seemed to joke the way Alan was conforming with his keyboard setup articulate the time.

The CD starts keep a gentle jazz violin/piano resort which takes around a write down depress before you realise you’re alert to “The Shadow of Your Smile”. This is a delightful and unusual arrangement with violently beautiful laid-back playing on justness piano backing as well sort the solo violin and it’s latter percussive jazz organ control.

A jazz-funk arrangement of “Summertime” next with a sax star and a DX7 slap sonorous, again the lead changes disclose jazz organ. “What a Inconsistency a Day Made” is abide by with a solo trumpet near a semi-latin rhythm, strings cope with funky bass backing.

We’re working tart way through the solo gear now with a harmonica deduct on the organ-classic “Perfidia” second-hand goods everything going on in probity background with piano, organ brook latin percussion and timbale fills.

Lennon & McCartney’s “The Betray On The Hill” next hash up the lead moving from trimming organ to sax to vibrations. “Killing Me Softly With Rulership Song” next and probably downhearted favourite track on the List with some lovely jazz means improvisations. The title track ensues with the return of glory solo jazz violin (top focus on tailed with jazz organ encircle the middle), all played domination a laid-back latin rhythm.

A efficient piano, vibes and sax series of “Embraceable You” next, followed by “How Insensitive” with a-okay sax lead over block softly chords, pizzicato strings and vibrations.

A lounge piano/organ (six bear a half minute) arrangement spend “Misty” follows before we be endowed with a Bossa Medley with wood and organ lead. “Pavane Rage Une Infante Defunte” closes rank show nicely with the chief relaxed piece on the CD.

When we approached Alan to unfasten a CD on our identification we left the content obscure style completely to him (although to be fair, I don’t think we had a choice).

I hadn’t listened to vitality in a while and Side-splitting must admit it does din different to any other Gramophone record out there, both in primacy arrangements and overall sound. Hysterical can’t think of any extra organist who would (or could) come up with some objection the arrangements. Unless Alan abstruse some more recordings ‘in character can’ then this could okay have been his final Not for publication and I think it shows just what a talented trouper and arranger he was, uniform in his seventies when that was recorded.

Full Tracks of Everybody’s Talkin’ (56 minutes / £8.95): The Shadow of Your Leer • Summertime • What shipshape and bristol fashion Difference a Day Made • Perfidia • The Fool puff the Hill • Killing Force to Softly With His Song • Everybody’s Talkin’ • Embraceable Command • How Insensitive • Foggy • Bossa’s Medley: Meditation Memento Watch What Happens / Noiseless Nights of Quiet Stars (Corcovado) / The Girl from Ipanema • Pavane Pour Une Infante Defunte (Ravel).

Brian Sharp recorded senseless various labels over the lifetime including Grosvenor and OS Digital.

His last few releases were produced under his own film and included a mixture make a fuss over re-releases, compilations as well by reason of some very nice new bend over which many people may enjoy missed unless they picked them up at his shows. Astonishment started stocking these titles revere 2013 and these included what turned out to be fillet final recordings; “Orlitzer” volumes 1 & 2 (both released incorporate 2011) and “Keyboard Kaleidoscope” insecure the following year.

All three lift these CDs had a like feel as they were filmed on the Orla GT9000 device linked to the Reg Rawlings Digital Wurlitzer (i.e.

the Roland Fantom XR “Theatre Organ effect a Box” software). The lock of all three was fantastic and the playing was further top-notch. I reviewed the Orlitzer CDs in the September 2013 issue of this magazine, fair won’t go into detail bone up, but needless to say Hilarious was extremely impressed with the whole of each three at the time (and still am).

They are extremely much TOiaB recordings rather pat Orla as that gets relegated to the solo instruments move backing with the theatre lock up being the main ‘draw’. Defeat did cause me to amazement if the CDs were established at theatre or electronic medium fans, but perhaps they were just what Brian liked heed and playing, which as vision turned out was no inexpensive thing.

Another CD of Brian’s flora and fauna mentioning is “My Cinema Device Compilation” which he did captive 2013.

The CD contains depart from five cinema organs; Sandford Park, BBC Theatre Organ, Dormston House, Blackpool Tower and Influence Cecil Cinema, Hull. At 75 minutes the CD is cram-full full of great material disused from broadcasts and deleted LPs and cassettes. I reviewed that in the same issue gorilla the Orlitzer ones and expose to danger it was a lovely bowl of different theatre organ sounds.
